What you need to know about the Europa League Round of 16 match in Lyon

Europa League matches are always exciting.

Even more so when they feature some of the world’s best players, with each side hoping to put some pressure on their opponents.

This year’s fixture is set to be a battle between Lyon and Paris Saint-Germain, and with the Premier League, Bundesliga and La Liga all vying for first place, it will be interesting to see who comes out on top.

First up is Lyon, who are the defending champions and were the runners-up to Bayern Munich in the last round.

Their home-and-away fixtures against Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich are also among the top games in the Premier league this year, so it will not be a surprise if Lyon take the lead in the second leg.

However, the French champions are unlikely to be too worried by a side like Bayern, who have won seven out of their last eight European matches.

Borussia Dortmund, meanwhile, were relegated last season to the second division and have struggled since.

They have lost all five of their league matches and have now played five of the six matches since, losing once.

They will be hoping that they can bounce back against Lyon, with their star player, Mario Götze, the one to watch.

Getty Getty 1/5 Borussia Mönchengladbach Dortmund, the Bundesliga’s third tier, have made their way back into the top six of the table after finishing last season in second, and will hope to make it six straight in the league this term.

With five matches to go, their opponents are Bayer Leverkusen, who finished second in the Bundesliga last season.

They currently sit fourth in the table, having won five of six.

Their next fixture is against Bayern Munich, who they beat 5-1 on aggregate last season, and are now three points clear of second-placed Borussia Monchenglads.

Leverkusen will be a tough task to beat, as they have conceded just six goals in nine matches.

However they will need a great performance from their centre-back pairing, as Thomas Müller and Bastian Schweinsteiger are currently the best defensive pair in the German Bundesliga.

They are both 23 years old, but are both highly rated, with both having started at a Bundesliga club and have both scored goals in the Champions League last season too.

Both sides have some great strikers on their books, and Dortmund have already brought in a new signing in the form of Borussia München’s Lukas Podolski.

The 25-year-old is an experienced striker who has played for Bayern Munich and Hoffenheim, and is set for a huge season in the new year.

München have scored 23 goals in 17 matches in all competitions this season, with a hat-trick in their 2-0 victory over Borussia Moenchenglassn in the Europa Cup.

Boris Gross, who has been linked with a move to the Premier, is also expected to play in this fixture.

He scored twice for Borussia Stuttgart last season and also helped them qualify for the Europa Final in 2015.

He will be looking to prove that he deserves to play alongside Bayern Munich’s superstar, Mario Gotze.

Podolski will also be in the squad, having scored in the 3-0 win over Boras Krefeld in the UEFA Champions League final last season as well as the 3 1-0 defeat to Juventus last season before joining Dortmund.

He is the second-youngest player to play for Dortmund, after Mario Götsch, who is 22 years old.

This will be an interesting game to watch and is a big one for both teams.

The first leg is set in Lyon, the second in Paris, and the final is at the Stade de France.

Kick-off is scheduled for 8:00pm on Saturday 9th January.
